“Wake up kids!” said a voice.
Adrian opened his eyes and saw Carl staring into his face he was holding a lantern.
“I am up.” said Adrian. “Rebecca wake up.”
“Is it ten already?” said Rebecca said sitting up in bed.
“Yes children.” said Carl. “The potion is ready. Get up and follow me and I will show you how to put it on the weapon.”
As Adrian and Rebecca went into the room with the huge pot they notice a odd smell. It smelled of blood.
“Smell it? That smell means our potion is working. Now you boy.” said Carl pointing at Adrian. “How much do you need?”
“We need some for now and some for us to take home.” said Rebecca. “For our friends…”
“Here.” said Adrian holding out green arrows. “We need these to be used on our journey.”
“Very well give it to me.” said Carl.
With that Carl toke all of Adrian’s arrows and dipped them in the potion. There was a blinding flash. When Carl toke the arrows out of the potion they shone and sparkled.
“There.” said Carl. “It is done.”
“Are you sure it worked fine?” said Rebecca. “We will be putting our lives into this potion.”
“Positive.” said Carl. “Now you want to save your friend?”
“Duh.” said Adrian.
“Alright when you leave this store make a right and keep going till you see the police station.” said Carl. “I hope you guys have a plan because they are not going to just hand him over.”
“Yeah we have a plan.” said Adrian.
“If your plan succeeds. Come back I will give you a small bottle of the potion to take with you then show you the way to my friend Jason. If you are caught you don’t know me.” said Carl.
“I understand.” said Adrian. “But plan on us coming back.”
“Then I wish you good luck.” said Carl. “And boy those arrows are your life if you see a dragon. If you do see one do not wait for them to transform kill them before they look at the moon.”
“I remember Seth saying something about that.” said Rebecca.
“C’mon lets go!” said Adrian. “Rex is waiting!”
As Adrian and Rebecca head up the stairs Carl called up good luck.
“Count on us coming back!” called Adrian.
“You know were to go!” called Carl.
And with that Adrian and Rebecca were out on the streets.
“Well this is it.” said Rebecca. “Our first test. Saving Rex without getting killed.”
“Don’t worry.” said Adrian. “Don’t forget I have something the dragons fear.”
As the two are walking down the street it is silent. Not a soul is on the street. Neither Adrian nor Rebecca spoke the whole way. They new the plan and were ready to execute it.
“There it is.” said Adrian when they approached a building which said “POLICE” on a sign next to a large building with shrubs surrounding the entire building except for the pavement to the door.
“Ready?” said Adrian.
“I never broke a law in my life…” said Rebecca.
“Will you shut up and go in!” said Adrian.
“Alright.” said Rebecca. “I’m ready.”
“Here is the knife.” said Adrian handing her a knife. “You know your part?”
“Of course.” said Rebecca. “Well here I go. Wait one last thing don’t come in if anyone else except the police are there.”
“You got it.” said Adrian. “Now go!”
Rebecca toke a few long breaths then walked down the pavement and into the station. She looked back and saw Adrian walking into the shrubs to hide. There were only five policemen there. One was the chief, who was sitting in a chair reading, two others were doing the same. The last two were with Rex trying to get him to talk in another room. As soon as Rebecca walked in the three police turned to look at her.
“Can I help you young lady?” said the chief.
“Why yes you could.” said Rebecca stuttering. “I am looking for a boy who was arrested this morning for shooting a gun.”
“Why yes we do.” said the chief. “Do you know him? Is he related to you?”
“He is…” said Rebecca. “He is…”
“Doll.” said the chief. “If you don’t tell us he is facing prison already. Want us to make it longer?”
Rebecca closed her eyes and said quietly, ready to lie. While she said this the two other officers who were talking to Rex came out to see who was there.
“He is my broth….”
Before she could finish the door opened. A tall man entered he was covered with scars all over his face. Behind him were two men with there heads covered with hoods from there capes they wore. If Rebecca could have screamed she would have. However her fear froze her. The police also seemed equally terrified but not for the same reason as Rebecca.
“M…Mast….Master Ellkans!” cried the chief then the other for police men cried the same thing then sank to the floor and bowed.
“Dirt.” said Ellkans. “I did not come here just to be nice. I need you to tell me were I can find the man named Jason Dakes. And hurry or I will have to have you demoted and returned to Yastom were you can work as a slave to king Medora.”
“No anything but that!” said the chief. “I worked for years to get to this position.”
“THEN STOP CRYING AND GET ME THE ADDRESS. I AM ON A TIGHT SCHEDULE!!!” screamed Ellkans.
“Yes master Ellkans.” blubbered the chief as he walked into another room.
Curiously no one noticed Rebecca was there the whole time. If Rebecca had a pen and pencil she could have wrote all this down. In these two minutes she learned many things. The police were from the dragon world. Ellkans was a sort of general who all feared. A place called Yastom that she had no idea about. Every one new Medora.
“Her…Here it is.” said the chief, returning with the address. “449 Jamson place. It is straight…”
“I KNOW WERE IT IS!!” screamed Ellkans. “I now this world like the back of my hand. I just needed to know were he lives.”
Ellkans and the two men with him turned and left.
“Good day.” said Ellkans curtly.
“Shall I call a cab for you?” said the chief. “It is a two hour walk.”
“No.” said Ellkans shortly. “I will walk and let Dakes enjoy his last two hour of life.”
And with that Ellkans left the room. The police breathed a sigh of relief. Then the chief turned his head and realized Rebecca was there.
“You!” cried the chief.
“What are we going to do with her chief?” said a cop.
“Bind her.” said the chief.
Now this Rebecca was prepared for all this. This was part of the plan. Rebecca opened her mouth and screamed. On a cue the door opened. Adrian walked in. BUT he looked much different. While hiding he covered his face with dirt and toke of his bandage so it really did look like he was just shot.
“Police! Help!” cried Adrian. “A man just shot me! Two others are dead!”
“Were…? What…? asked the chief.
“Down the street to the left. Hurry!” cried Adrian.
“Lets go men hurry!” said the chief, and with that the five cops left.
“I wonder why they didn’t get you to a hospital.” said Rebecca.
“They only care about there reputation.” said Adrian now putting the bandage back on.
“Lets go!” said Rebecca. “REX! Were are you?”
“Rebecca? Adrian?” whispered a voice.
“Rex!” said Adrian. “Were are you?”
“Here.” said Rex, weakly.
“He is in that room.” said Rebecca pointing to a door.
It was locked.
“Move over.” said Adrian.
With much force Adrian kicked the door opening it. Reveling Rex tied to a chair. His face covered in blood. Rebecca took out a knife and cut the cords. Rex fell to the ground then stood up rubbing his numb hands.
“I’m okay.” said Rex.
He turned to Rebecca and Adrian.
“You guys are the best.” said Rex quietly.
He toke both of them into a long embrace.
“We can’t stay here long.” said Rebecca. “The cops are going to be back soon. I have a ton to tell you guys but first we need to get back to Carl.”
“Carl?” said Rex.
“We will tell you later.” said Adrian. “Come on.”
There luck wasn’t as great as they hoped. As soon as the walked into the dark outside the cops were returning.
“There’s that boy!” screamed one of the cops. “Get him!”
“They are dragons!” whispered Rebecca to Adrian. “Fire!”
Adrian toke out his bow from under his shirt and loaded a green arrow with the potion and fired with such accuracy I hit one of the cops straight in the heart. The cop didn’t realize he was hit for a few seconds when he did his eyes bulged before he toppled over and never moved again.
“How did he?” asked the cop. “No arrows can kill a dragon… THEY KNOW!!! They must have found the one way to kill us!! Kill them! Ellkans will kill us if we fail. Transform! Now!”
Before they could Adrian had another potion green arrow on his bow and had yet another great shot and killed another cop.
“Run!” said Adrian. “Now!”
With that the trio toke off. Over her head Rebecca saw three grown big dragons instead of the cops.
“Can you can run Rex?” asked Adrian.
“I’m okay lets go.” said Rex.
“Were are they?” growled one of the dragons.
“They are over there chief.” growled a cop.
“Get up!” growled the chief. “Take flight!”
Apparently some people were walking around. When they say three dragons in the sky they screamed. It was a terrifying moment.
“Find them kill them hurry!” said the chief.
“There they are!” growled a cop.
“DIVE!” said the chief.
One of the cops dived and landed a foot from Rex. Adrian ran forward with a green potion arrow in hand and waved it in the dragons face the dragon’s eyes grew with fear, It froze. Adrian toke the arrow in hand and threw it with such force it punctured the dragon. Seeing how the potion arrows are so deadly to dragons the dragon rolled over and died.
“NO!” screamed the chief.
“There it is!” cried Adrian. “There is Carl’s pet shop. We are almost there! I think we are going to make it!”
“I cant run any more!” cried Rex. With that he collapsed.
“REX!” cried Rebecca.
Adrian was a man of action and not hesitation he ran back picked up Rex and carried him to the door Carl’s pet shop.
“CARL!” called Rebecca. “We’re here!”
“Children? Is that you?” called Carl from the other side of the door.
“Yes it is us!” screamed Adrian.
As the door opened letting the trio in Adrian got one last look outside. The dragons mouth was only twenty feet from them. Adrian ran in and locked the door.
“Did you succeed?” asked Carl.
“You bet we did!” said Rebecca. “Rex meet Carl. The man who saved our lives today he made us the potions that stopped the dragons from eating us.”
“Hi.” said Rex weakly.
“So you’re the idiot who got himself in jail.” said Carl. “And had your friends risk your lives for you. You idiot!”
Rex smiled grimly, as he got to his feet.
“You really are a…” started Carl.
At that exact moment the door to the pet shop was banged open. Adrian only had a split second to see who it was. It was the chief in human form with a gun out and pointed at Adrian behind him was the other cop. Before Adrian could yell “NO!” The chief fired. Adrian didn’t know if any one was hit but it was not him on extinct he took his bow aimed and fired. It hit the chief straight through the chest. There was a lot of gurgling noise coming from the chief until he finally fell and died.
“Is every one alright?” asked Adrian turning around.
Rebecca and Rex both looked petrified but the were not looking at Adrian but Carl. He stared wide eyed and shocked. Right under his heart was blood.
“NO!” cried Adrian. He turned around to the last cop who seemed frozen in fear and fired another arrow the cop was on the floor in two seconds.
“Ah, ah.” gasped Carl.
“Carl no!” screamed Rebecca.
Carl turned to Rebecca. He looked like he wanted to say something but no words came out. He was closing his eyes when he pointed to a self holding the same substance that was in there potion.
“Good bye Carl.” said Rebecca a second after she knew he could not here her.
“He needs to be buried.” said Adrian.
Rex walked over to were Carl had pointed and took the potion it was in a rather large bottle. Rebecca and Adrian never did see what color it was because they couldn’t see it with all the smoke coming out of it. Now it looked a brilliant blue. Rex looked at the floor. The knife Rebecca used to cut his cords. He knew what the potion was he opened it a dropped a tiny drop onto the knife the drop glistened like a diamond there was a blinding flash but only Rex realized it the other two were to shocked to speak. Quietly Rex put the bottle in his coat pocket it was big enough to hold it.
“We have no time.” said Rebecca after a long silence. “We cant bury him yet. The dragon leader Ellkans is going to kill him.”
“What?” asked Adrian.
“Follow me you guys.” said Rebecca.
As the trio walked out the door Rex looked back at all the blood that was spilled. He couldn’t help feeling pity.
“Taxi! Taxi!” called Rebecca waving into the street, in two minutes a cab was in front of them.
“Where you going?” asked the taxi driver.
“449 Jamson place.” said Rebecca. “How much?”
“Twenty five.” said the driver.
“I will do thirty if you step on it.” said Rebecca.
“It’s a deal. Hope in.” said the driver.
The three squeezed into the cap. It was rather uncomfortable.
“Were are we going?” said Rex.
“To Jason Dakes.” said Rebecca.
“How do you know were he lives?” asked Rex.
“We have some time I should explain.” said Rebecca. “While I was in the police station before we rescued you Rex a man entered. He was tall and bald with scars covering his entire face. All the dragon police feared him his name is Ellkans. I think he is a general for Medora. I also learned the name for the dragon utopia. It is called Yastom. Ellkans is on his way to kill Dakes. He said he was going to walk to let Dakes live his last two hours so if we drive we might beat him there and save him.”
The ride was rather silent. All were thinking the same thing were they were going the would learn some very important things.
“We’re here.” said the driver.
“Thank you.” they all said at once.
“Guys this is it.” said Adrian as the approached the door to a old rundown and broken house. Adrian knocked on the door.
“Who is it?” called a voice.
Adrian and Rex looked at Rebecca.
“Mr. Dakes? Is that you?” asked Rebecca.
“Yes. What do you want?” called the voice.
“We come with very important news.” called Rebecca. “Please let us in.”
The old door creaked open reveling the man they had searched for. Jason Dakes. Jason was a short man with a mustache he looked like a mouse.
“Yes?” said Dakes.
“You are in grave danger.” blurted Adrian.
“What?” said Dakes. “Me, in danger? You don’t know me but I could take on a army.”
“We know.” said Adrian hastily.
“Know what.” said Dakes.
“We know you’re a dragon.” said Rebecca.
Dakes eyes grew big with wonder. “How did you know?” he asked.
“From two things”. said Adrian. “Your book and friend Carl.”
“You know Carl?”
“Yes.” said Rebecca lowering her head.
“Why so sad child?” said Dakes.
“He was killed a short while ago.” said Rex. “Shot by a cop.”
“Carl…” said Dakes lowering his head. “He was my friend. He was the only one I could talk to about Yastom.”
“And your next.” said Adrian. “Some people from Yastom are on there way here to kill you.”
“And who are they?” said Dakes. “No one can kill me not even other dragons!”
“Ellkans is his name.” said Rebecca.
At the sound of his name Dakes lost control.
“Ell…Ellkans?” said Dakes stuttering.
“Yes! He is going to be here any minute!” cried Rex.
“Oh god!” screamed Dakes. “I got to hide. Run away. Change my name. NO!”
“So much for beating a army.” whispered Rex.
“Why is Ellkans so bad?” asked Adrian. “I’m sure we can take him. I have your potion on my arrows.”
“You read my book?” said Dakes while he ran around grabbing things.
“Of course!” said Rex. “We want to try and fight Medora. Our best friend is his son and Medora wants to take him to Yastom and make him his heir. We will not let that happen!”
“Then you are all doomed.” said Dakes. “No one I mean no one fights Medora and wins. He would kill fifty of you before you get a chance to get near him. You wouldn’t win not even with my potion. Medora is covered in tough scales. The only way to hurt him is a small spot on top of his head. If you ever get to see it you are probably dead. This spot has no scales. It is only three inches long. You would need to stick a sword straight into his head.”
Rebecca toke out a notebook and wrote this all down. “What about Ellkans? Is he also invincible?”
“Yes he is invincible.” said Dakes. “The only one stronger then him is Medora himself. However he is not a dragon. He is a human like you and me. But he has powers.”
Powers? Asked Rebecca.
“Yes.” said Dakes.” In Yastom the dragons have a language. But hardly anyone knows it. Not even dragons. Ellkans and the rest of Medora’s generals know it. It is so hard to learn and control it even Medora doesn’t know it. When you say words in that language whatever you say happens. For example if I say ice in dragon my hands would through ice wherever I point my hand. Also…”
Adrian realized it first. The soft sounds of steps at the door. “Oh no.” He said. Then he loaded his bow and aimed at the door. Dakes looked petrified. Rebecca stared frightened. Rex stepped behind Adrian. There was the sound of someone trying to open the door. Adrian then heard a voice. “Urto” it said and the door opened. Ellkans walked in followed by the two men with there heads covered.
Dakes screamed. Adrian aimed and fired. Ellkans stuck out his hand and said “Chlem”. The arrow stopped in midair. Turned around and fired right back at Adrian. Adrian ducked and missed death by a second.
“We finally found you.” said Ellkans paying no attention to Adrian, and giving all his attention to Dakes. “You have been hiding for so long now we found you.”
Adrian loaded another arrow aimed and fired straight at Ellkans. Without even looking back Ellkans said “Chelm” and again the arrow turned and aimed straight for Adrian. Adrian stood frozen in fear at Ellkans powers. Rex saw he wasn’t going to move so he turned and jumped at Adrian’s feet pushing him down and saving his life.
Ellkans turned to Adrian. “Do you want me to kill you also?” He asked.
“You will not take him!” said Rebecca throwing her arms in front of Dakes.
“You really do want to die, girl.” said Ellkans. “Yes I saw you at the police station. I thought you wouldn’t want to die so I ignored you. But now I know you are Rebecca friend of Seth. And your other friends are Rex and Adrian. King Medora ordered me to kill you also. Now you will die!”
Ellkans smiled a evil smile looked at the roof and pointed his hand. GERTO! He screamed. Instantly fire burst from his hand and hit the roof. Spreading fire every were.
“See you in hell!” said Ellkans as he walked out the door but stopped and looked at the two men. “Kill them their body’s will be burned and every one will think it was just a fire that killed”. And with that he left the house.
“Rex, Adrian Mr. Dakes! We need to get out of here!” screamed Rebecca.
The two men walked toward Mr. Dakes and toke off there hoods. They both were bald they both had smiles on there faces like but not regular ones like they were glued to there faces. They couldn’t be human They reached to there sides. Adrian recognized it what they were grabbing. Sheaths for swords
Rebecca screamed the fire was spreading to the door. There one chance of survival.
The two dragons toke out there swords and charged. They were heading for Adrian. But Adrian was ready he loaded in a second and fired. He hit one in the belly who fell and died. Before he could reload the other one was right on top of him. The dragon toke the bow and threw it across the room before Adrian could react the dragon got a hold of Adrian’s throat and lifted him into the air chocking Adrian.
“Run!” Adrian managed to scream.
Dakes toke off out the door. Rex ran to try to help. Rebecca stood by the door torn. She could run and save her life or go and save Adrian and die in the flames. Before she made her decision Rex toke out the knife he put the potion on and stabbed the dragon to death. Adrian fell to the ground gasping for air. Rex bended down and grabbed Adrian and ran pulled him out the door. Followed by Rebecca. As soon as they walked out the door the house collapsed.
“We are alive.” gasped Adrian as he stood up.
“Looks like the wrong people were burned.” said Rex.
“We have to get out of here.” said Rebecca. “If we stay here the police will think we did it!”
“Lets go.” said Adrian.
“Wait!” said Rex. “Were is Mr. Dakes?”
Adrian and Rebecca looked around. He was gone.
“Mr. Dakes!” cried Rebecca. “Where are you?”
No answer.
“Lets go.” said Adrian. “He is probably long gone.”
